Your Measure as a Leader

Your Measure as a Leader.

The measure of you as a leader is not what you do, but what others do because of what you do.

– Howard Hendricks, Dallas Theological Seminary

This, my favorite, quote on leadership, has impacted me for years.

Leadership has nothing to do with me doing my thing well – my sermon, my speech, my lecture, my meeting, my mentoring, or my writing. It has everything to do with how others have grown, acted, learned, organized, matured, loved, and lived differently because of what I did.

Neither does leadership have anything to do with you doing your thing, whatever it is, well. It’s about what others do because of what you do.

Think about that for a minute, and then stop evaluating your leadership too soon! You might just find yourself really encouraged!

Ryan, you sure were a terriffic leader in terms of the definition you provided in this post. You really made an impact on me and my leadership and brought another level of refinement in helping to make me a better leader.

My favorit quote about leadership comes from Jesus. It’s in Mat 23:10-12

Seems Jesus has a unique take on “Leadership” for His Disciples – “ONE”

New American Standard Bible – Mat 23:10-12.
Do not be called leaders; for “ONE” is your Leader, that is, Christ.
But the greatest among you shall be your servant.
    Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled;
and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

    The Message – Mat 23:10-12.
And don’t let people maneuver you into taking charge of them.
There is only one Life-Leader for you and them—Christ.
**Do you want to stand out? – Then step down. – Be a servant.**
If you puff yourself up, you’ll get the wind knocked out of you.
But if you’re content to simply be yourself, your life will count for plenty.

Haven’t you ever wondered why Jesus taught His Disciples NOT to be called “Leaders?”
Could it have been because “For you have “ONE” leader – the Christ?”

And NONE did… In the Bible, ALL “Disciples of Christ” called themselves “Servants.” 😉

And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold:
them also I must bring, and they shall “hear My voice; “
and there shall be “ONE” fold, and “ONE” shepherd.
    John 10:16

One Fold – One Shepherd – One Voice – One Leader
